Tiana: What is the best guard dog, that is good with a family, and cute?
I want to get a dog that can be a guard dog but is good with children aged 8-12. Also, it has to be easily trained and cute. We are looking at American Bulldogs. Any input?

American Bulldogs would be good but maybe something larger if that wouldn't be probable.

I would suggest a boxer. I almost got an American bulldog but ended up with a Boxer pup. He is the most intelligent dog I have ever owned. He loves kids and other puppies. He is 4 months old and about 30lbs and should reach 65 at full size. I find he will be more manageable because he isn't as big as the American bulldog. I just had a bullmastiff pass away on me in august and am a giant dog fan.
The only problem with the giant breeds is that they can be very lazy and just want to sleep a lot. If you had kids, they may get bored with the dog's lack of enthusiasm. I in fact loved the passiveness of my bullmastiff but don't have children.
The boxer breed is a natural clown, good with children, loyal, and a great guard dog. Mine has shown signs of being a natural search and rescue dog. He is easily trainable because of his intelligence. At 10 weeks he was riding a skateboard!

purebred pit bulls (American Staffordshire terrier) are great for protection and they're loyal to their family. DO NOT GET ONE FROM THE POUND OR HUMANE SOCIETY! they most likely have a bad bloodline which can mean that they're aggressive. just train it to be good around people and it'll be fine. MUST BE TRAINED WELL! powerful jaws. and they're so cute!

American bulldogs are good but they can be a little too much, they need firm training and strong. A boxer is a more handleable size and has that cute bulldog face. They are playful and not as dominant but can still hold their own to protect the family.

I have a Giant Schnauzer. They are very protective and good with the family. They are very intelligent.
I would recommend a Giant/Miniature Schnauzer.
