What can I Give my Skinny St Bernard to Gain Weight Fast?

Q: What I can give my St Bernard to Gain weight fast?
My St Bernard puppy had worms and now she is very skinny and underweight. How can I fatten her up quickly to achieve normal St Bernard weight?

I know what you're going through. I usually give an extra cup of dog food to my dog. She recently was ill as well, and was already emaciated, so instead of giving her 1 1/2 cup I give her 2 1/2 cups. But I am sure a St. Bernard eats more than that, so give her an extra cup 1/2. But ask your vet first.

It will be better for her health not to add weight too quickly. Just feed her the amount she should have to maintain her ideal weight. Her bones will get covered soon enough.

You're probably going to laugh at me, but there's nothing like a big bowl of Biscuits and Gravy to fatten up a skinny St Bernard!

Dealing with a ton of half-starved strays who wander past my fence, it's one of the few foods that dogs won't turn down, is easy on their stomach, and is packed with so many carbs that they will gain weight lickety-split.

Just whip up a batch of biscuits and crumble them into a bowl. Make a pan of white gravy (I may or may not include breakfast sausage) and pour it over the biscuits!

You never ever want to fatten up a giant breed like St Bernard fast!!! They need to grow & gain weight slowly, so their bones & hips aren't damaged!

Feed her a good high-quality food made for giant/ large breeds.
Canidae, NutriSource (is excellent!) Wellness, Eagle Pac, Taste of the Wild are a few good brands. A giant breed is best if on the lean side (NOT underweight!) it is better on their hips & joints.

Trust me, nothing is more heartbreaking than having a dog with bad hips that has to be put down at the age of 4 or 5 because he cannot walk!! It is best to work with your vet on this, they can suggest what foods to feed and how much, they will also tell you what weight is best for her!! Hope this helps,, good luck!!

You can add more dry food to her diet. You can also give her drained, rinsed ground beef or white rice. Do not give her any pork of any kind… it could make her very sick. I also recommend avoiding canned food if she is not accustomed to it. The reason is that the high-fat content in canned food can give some dogs diarrhea which would be counterproductive for weight gain.

  • How long should diarrhea last after the change of food?
  • What is better Royal Canine or Purina Pro Plan dog food?

Be sure to give her food on a regular schedule. If she is less than one year feed her twice a day. If she is one year or older, feed her once a day.

you really don't want to "fatten" up your St Bernard quickly. Feed normally and give some treats now and then and the dog will gradually gain weight. Feed a high-quality food without grains or by-products and he will be fine.

My St. Bernard female is 17 months old and has a weight of 92lbs. The vets says she’s fine but I think she’s to skinny for thiS age. She has relentless energy and is still groWing taller. Also she doesn’t seem to have much of an undercoat. I’ve had dna done and it came back 100 present St. Bernard. Any suggestions on gaining some weight.
