Melissa Serpico, a former Britain’s Got Talent participant, has written a song about Laika – the first living creature in space. Her own pet is called after this Russian dog that was sent to orbit the Earth in 1957, and died.
Melissa became known in 2010 when she promised that her dog Laika would play guitar at this ITV show while her owner would be singing, but the pet was just placing her paw on the strings.
This year Melissa tried to hit the BGT again with her new song about the Russian heroic dog after she heard that the talent judge Simon Cowell wants to send the winner of this year’s show into space. “I was ready to go live, but they cancelled me from the shortlist”, Melissa says.
The 40-year-old composer and singer believes that “when the show starts there will be a lot of hype about space, and my song could have good chances”. She has now uploaded her song to the YouTube hoping that someone could help her to produce this song independently. Melissa says she would also love some popular singers like Stacey Solomon or Cher Lloyd to sing it for her.
Melissa and her own dog Laika live in full harmony. “My dog is called Laika because I saw the Swedish film My life as a Dog on the night we were going to name her”, Melissa explains.
As a qualified astrologer Melissa already found it a coincidence when she learned that her last adopted dog, called Star, had seven brothers and sisters named after all the planets. Then, the night after Star's death she dreamt of a dog that looked like Laika. In that dream Star was happy and young again.
Melissa took it as a sign, and a few weeks later she got Laika in a rescue centre, fitting the image of the dream. So now she hopes the spirit of Star went into Laika, and she's amazed at the physical and personality similarities of the two. “Laika is a rescue from Ireland and we don't know anything about her history, but she is very-very good and cute”.

Russian Supermodel Inspects Dogs
Russian supermodel Irina Shayk believes that holiday season is the right time “to remember loved ones especially animals in need”. In mid-December the Russian model went to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) shelter in New York City to bring public attention to shelter animals “deserving a good home”.
At the shelter Irina Shayk, accompanied by Santa, picked out some dogs and cats to be blessed during the 3rd annual ASPCA Blessing of the Animals at Christ Church.
The Russian supermodel posted on Facebook: “Had a really great day today visiting the dogs at the ASPCA! It's really sad that so many of them are without a home so check out http://www.aspca.org/ to find out where you can go to donate or adopt one like this cute 3 legged guy I met today…”
Irina Shayk is a beautiful Russian model mostly known for her appearances in the Sports Illustrated, presenting new swimsuits.
She’s also dating an international soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Irina loves dogs. She has a Lab named Caesar (after Julius Caesar), who was fathered by one of the dogs playing the main role in Marley & Me.
Urging people to visit local shelters during the holiday season, the Russian model says that “Caesar can agree with that”.
