chris: How do I get my Alaskan Malamute to howl more often?
What should I do if my dog doesn't howl? My dog, Meeka, is an Alaskan Malamute and I love it when she howls but she howls like once or twice in the winter. Can I make her howl on command or is there anything I can do to make her howl?

Meeka must be an indoor dog.
Put her outside and listen to her howl at the other dogs and sounds.

Congratulations – you are the first person I have ever heard of who wanted theirs to howl more!
Before you ask how to make it howl……… go talk to your neighbors. They probably have heard her enough – since Malamutes usually howl the most when alone – when you are not there to hear it. Tie her up outside and go for a walk – you should be able to hear her for about half a mile.
My ex was a sprint musher, and, I have owned a Malamute before.
Good luck!

I trained my Shiba Inu to howl on command by waiting for her to howl when certain music was played. I would say "Suki, sing!" and praise her. She caught on well, so maybe try with different songs, to see if that'll get her to howl.

I have a pure Alaskan malamute puppy 3 months but he doesn't howl I don't know why and there is no reason bc I put him outside.

Some AM's will howl in response to you trying to howl (even if it's bad). I've known some that have sounded like they are having conversations with people. Take her outside and see if you can inspire her wild side!

The one who doesn’t want the dog to howl must be a person who doesn’t like dogs? Possibly? And I say good luck to anyone trying to get my dogs removed, regardless of who they are. That would not happen. Dogs howl for different reasons. And most if not all domesticated dogs come from the wolf…

If you really like Alaskan Malamutes and have had many before then you will realize they should howl, it brings out the wolf and fun side of them! They are beautiful and fun dogs, you need to play with them!

I used to howl for my beagle. Seriously. She would howl at distant sirens, but I could also get her to howl by howling at, and then with her.
I loved that dog.

I have an Alaskan malamute and he's 6 mos old. And mine howls a lot mainly when we go outside and close the door. But I can get him to howl with me. I howl at him and he will in turn howl back at me and when I stop and say speak to me he will then continue to howl at me more.

I have heard of dogs being trained to howl in response to specific sounds, such as sirens or musical instruments. Is it possible to train a dog to howl on command, even if they don’t naturally do so?

Hello, my Alaskan Malamute doesnt howl either. Can they strain their cords from barking? Some times I think he tries too but all that comes out is like a stained nose of sorts.

I don’t think it could be the reason. Maybe he’s just satisfied with his life :) Try to play the harmonica or put him in front of the TV and play Youtube videos of howling Huskies and Malamutes.

Why would you want to encourage the howling. Might sound cool but it will get on the neighbours nerves and thats the last thing you want as they can do things to get the dog removed if it becomes a problem.
