Lolz: How much does your ethnicity matter to a dog? I am soon getting either a Kuvasz or an Alaskan Malamute because I have done my research and those are the breeds I want. I have never heard of a dog being able to prejudge someone based on their ethnicity. I don't know if a dog would learn ethnic differences. Like if a dog has a white owner does the dog think all white people are like that or whatever. I mean there are neighborhoods that are predominantly a certain ethnic group. If a dog is born and raised in India and sees nothing but the native folk there, what does the dog do when he/she goes to America? It's very interesting. I guess it would depend on the dog too. But just for reference, I did watch a tv show on rhinos once, and the rhinos became sort of racist towards white people because in Africa, white doctors would go study them and it would make the rhinos uncomfortable. And rhinos eventually began to be able to associate white people with uncomfortable medical and scientific procedures and they became aggressive towards the doctors/scientists. I did have an American Eskimo, years ago, who did not like Mexicans……we would have to lock her up if one came onto the property (we lived in an agricultural area, where there were quite a few farmworkers.) She was fine with everyone else. However, different cultures DO view pets differently and have different standards of care. I have lived in Mexico where dogs are usually allowed to roam and not vaccinated. (I have no idea how dogs are generally treated in India.) Of course, culture is a generality, and people are individuals, so there are always exceptions. Just for the record – Indian is a nationality and culture, but not a race. They have no imagination or barriers where race is concerned, good owners have good dogs. Not all in the race will but the ones taught to fear will. Some countries do eat them. Dogs will react to feelings, fear is one they CAN smell on you. Like sweat. So you may notice a "race" that does fear causing dogs to react in a bad way. They will also do this if the owner is angry or does not like someone. the dog will react to how their owner feels. However, my first dog was a chow akita mix and had been abused by an African American man for the first year of his life. He would growl and be very tense around African American men when he first saw them. Once he got used to them he would be fine. It was just him remembering his puppyhood. A dog is not going to care what race their owner is and will respond well if the person is being a good pack leader. In cases where dogs are said to be “racist” this are cases where one the dog has not been exposed to people of that race, the dog had a bad experience with someone of that race or even the owner has issues of their own and the dog is picking that up when their human caretaker is around someone of that race. As far as what percentage of white dog owners own "difficult" breeds compared to what percentage non-white dog owners do, I have absolutely no clue. I doubt ethnicity makes a difference at all. But CULTURE might. One of my friends grew up in India and admits to being slightly appalled that Americans treat dogs like companions. He grew up with dogs – but they were owned for protection and not allowed in the house, etc. Different countries – India included – have different views of pet ownership. Dogs live in the now and could not care less even if you were blue lol be ASSERTIVE Answer by Andrew To the best of my knowledge, I believe a dog doesn't really care about your ethnicity, just that you love them and care for them and be their friend. I realize you have done the research, but my dog is a pound puppy. Here's our story- we went to the pound, my family and I and we were looking at these medium short-haired female dogs on the shelter website and said we want these dogs. But, we left them at the shelter. We found another dog- who happens to be a boy dog, a small size, and long-haired.
