Q: What is a medium sized running dog breed that doesn't shed? I was planning on getting either a Labrador or a Golden Retriever but my family is allergic to shedding. I really want a dog that possibly resembles the two but does not shed. Also, I want a dog that doesn't totally blow out of my price range of $ 100-$ 500. These are usually smaller breeds, such as s Shih Tzus, Yorkies, etc. I heard labradoodles do not shed, but am not sure. You could also research Wheaten Terriers, Airedales, and standard poodles. Dander is the problem for those with allergies and all dogs produce dander and all dogs produce allergens. However, there are some breeds that are better for those with allergies but there not 100 0/0 allergen-free. There is very minimal shedding (regular grooming helps a lot) and many people with allergies don't react to them. I can't think of any breed that looks like a Lab or Golden but doesn't shed. You could consider a Poodle mixed with Labrador or Golden. The chances of an allergic reaction will be a bit greater, though. Answer by Basset Owned & Appro Just to be clear: There are NO hypoallergenic dogs. There are dog breeds that may be less harsh to people's allergies, but no completely hypoallergenic. People are allergic to dander, not just the hair, and all dogs give off dander even if it's a minimal amount. A standard poodle is a good dog that fits your size requirement that usually minimally irritates allergies. Unlike their toy counterparts (no offense) they are quite intelligent and are highly trainable. Just make sure to do more extensive research before making a decision. You are not going to find a quality bred puppy (which is key) for anywhere near $ 100, though you may be able to for around $ 500 (depending on the circumstances with the breeder). Also, make sure you do your homework on the cost of owning a dog. The initial price is minimal compared to what you will pay for veterinary care and upkeep in the first year alone. One final note – disregard any advice to get anything that ends in "doodle" "poo" etc. Those are mutts. The reason being also is that "labradoodles" and "goldendoodles," which others might suggest for you (b/c of allergies), receive traits randomly from both parents. They usually don't cost much, much less than a dog from a "breeder" or pet store, they are up to date on shots, spayed or neutered, and many have obedience training before they leave the shelter. Almost any dog that is mixed with a poodle won't shed. You can find Labradoodles and Goldendoodles that do not shed. Best of luck! If you adopt an older "doodle" dog (not a puppy) you can see if they take after the lab or golden parent or if they have the poodle traits.
