Can my Chihuahua get Pregnant by a Labrador?

Q: Is it possible for my chihuahua to get pregnant by a labrador?
My Chihuahua is in heat? and I caught a male Labrador in our backyard (he tunneled under the fence). If he could have got her pregnant, what should I do?
- Our fence is a 8 ft privacy fence that had never been breached before. How else can I keep her safe outside (she hates being inside).

Yes, it's very possible and there's not much you can do...

Female chihuahua to male lab.. unless he is very very very small for his breed. NO. it is not possible. While he will be attracted to her scent the mechanics for a proper mating just don't exist.

what you can do is consult your vet, who will tell you it's not likely.. and can give you an Rx to abort if you feel the need. You can investigate getting her spayed but research both the pros and cons of the issue, not just the rote answer of " no unwanted puppies and a lower chance of mammary tumors" there are a host of risks that increase with spaying.

Talk to your neighbor, he needs to keep his dog contained. And you need to make sure you're outside with your girl while she is in heat just in case.

Of course, it is possible, however highly unlikely. If it did happen, the pregnancy would most likely kill the chihuahua. Your best bet is to contact a vet and schedule to have her spayed asap. When my female chihuahua first came into heat at 6 months of age…about a month before her appointment to be spayed, my neighbor's labrador camped out at my house until her heat cycle was over. He would chase her around the yard and whine and cry at the door when she was inside.

My chihuahua may be pregnant and the only other dog she has contact with is our lab that is 30x her weight and size, does anyone know if the puppies could just be born incredibly small or if they would kill the mother? I don’t have the money to take her to a vet, how can I be sure she’s pregnant?

Before I got my chi she ran away for a night with her previous owners and did, in fact, get pregnant by a black lab confirmed by a few vets. It might've been a smaller lab but my chi was about6 lbs and dealt with the pregnancy well.

Answer by Lorraine
It has been known, but I would seek veterinary advice asap.

First of all with a dog that big then she could have internal injuries if it did happen.
And if it did then she would be in grave danger of not being able to carry and give birth to the pups, so it would be best if you schedule a spay for her anyway.

What are the potential legal implications of this situation, considering the Labrador’s owner may be liable for any resulting puppies? How should I approach this delicate situation with the Labrador’s owner without causing unnecessary conflict?

Try to confirm the earliest that your girl is pregnant. An ultrasound can do that starting from around day 16. Also, watch for nipple color change 2 – 3 weeks after conception. If she’s pregnant discuss with a good vet what you should do. There are drugs, and there’s a surgical abortion but both may be not safe for your pet’s health. You’ll have to choose the lesser of two evils.

Why were you so irresponsible by leaving your in heat female out where another dog could get to her. What do you think you should do? Isn't that pretty obvious?

No. It would be almost impossible unless she was inseminated on purpose. Even then a chi couldnt carry them full term. Bring her inside or keep a close eye on her because male dogs will do anything when a female is in heat. They might even kill her. Be careful.

What you should do is get her to the vet ASAP and have her spayed. She will die if she gets pregnant by the lab.
