Greenthumb87: Why do my neighbor's dogs get so violent when I'm around?
My neighbors have 2 amazing dogs that I love to play with. They even put in a back gate so I can slip in and play with them during the day. One is a medium sized golden retriever that almost has the personality of a human. She is so sensitive to feelings and loves and licks the heck out of any human that comes into contact with her. The other is a black (golden) retriever who came about a year and a half after the golden retriever. He is just a puppy but is absolutely huge! He's not much of a kisser but he likes to bore himself into you and lay on you until you submit to petting him. They are both very playful and seem to love each other, when they're alone. But whenever I go over to play with them, the golden retriever seems to only want me to play with her. She is very protective of me and snarls if the other comes close and if he gets TOO close, she goes after him snapping and growling and baring her teeth. Its frightening to witness and I don't think its playful in any way. The black dog has even gotten to the point where he gets just as angry when the golden retriever goes after him. I say stop and they will for just a moment but it will inevitably happen again in just a few moments. Now if I specifically call for the black dog and show him affection then the golden retriever will sulk off and either eat or sit and watch us. Last night, I couldn't even get into the yard because they were fighting over me and the golden retriever, in an attempt to bite the black dog, bit my hand instead, so I abruptly left. What can I do to show them that I love them both, one just as much as the other? I really love them and love to play with them but if this continues they will probably end up hating each other and I'll never be able to go over again.
I like your answer OnlyMonsters... Its just hard because I do love them so much and leaving them is hard! I have talked to the owners and they say that they are just being jealous, but I don't think they know the severity of the situation. They know that I love the dogs and the dogs love me just as much, I don't think they would have put in the gate if they didn't think so.
What do you mean by guarding Erika? Like, the golden is guarding me from the black retriever?

You need to not go over there anymore without the owners. It sounds like a guarding behavior and frankly, this is for the owners to deal with.
