~Unicorns are fluffy~: How do you tell an abused dog no?
16 wks pregnant and I'm loosing patience with my brother in laws dog, well more like my brother in law. They got this dog from a shelter about seven years ago, they think he was 6 when they adopted him. Well he must have been really abused because if you sneeze the dog will run out of the room with his tail between his legs. When they first got him they couldn't tell him to lay down because he would wet himself, anything they did and this dog would wet himself. Well he has gotten better, but he is really really clingy, lately he clings to me. I can't stand it! This dog will follow me where ever I go. He isn't a small dog mind you he is HUGE! They think that he is a Great Pyrenees, Caucasian Ovtcharka mix with some Golden Retriever in there. He bumps me and I nearly fall over, he isn't the most graceful dog, and it doesn't help that I'm clumsy as it is. My problem isn't with the clingy really, well it sort of is but they don't bathe this dog but once every two months or so, and his teeth are literally rotting out of his skull! If i had a picture I would post it, but his front teeth are nearly gone, all that is left are these little brown and black nubs and his gums are really really swollen, I think they are infected. So his breath is beyond bad and he smells like something died! I feel bad for him and I try to love on him because I know he needs it, but I can't be around him for long periods of time because he makes me gag. They say they don't take him to the vet for his teeth because he is old and they don't see why they should spend money on a dog that is going to die soon. It sounds harsher than it is, the vet is the one that told them that the treatment for his teeth wasn't necessary at his age because it wouldn't do him any good seeing as how he is pretty much on his death bed. Back to the point, If I sit on the couch he thinks he needs to be on my lap. It is really uncomfortable seeing as how I am pregnant and he isn't a small dog, not to mention the smell he radiates. I can't tell him no in any tone of voice because then he will get scared and wet himself. When I eat something he is right there breathing on me and it makes my stomach turn and I almost throw up, and then I can't finish eating. I can't tell them not to bring him over because my husband and I are living with my mother in law until our new apartment opens up. It is getting harder and harder to be around this dog, I don't know what to do, what would you do if you were in my situation?
I do eat at the table, his breath is just that bad! he will put his head on my leg and look up at me panting and drooling

You could talk to your family about how the dog smell is making you feel. A lot of pregnant women develop a heightened sense of smell during their term. I think it's pretty reasonable (and common) for a pregnant woman to ask people to keep strong/gross smells away from her.
