Carly Abinger: How can you stop a cocker spaniel from peeing all over the place?
My family is getting a cocker spaniel and people say when you come to see them they get very excited and since they have weak bladders they pee all over the place, can anybody tell me how to train them to stop?

Some people say crate training. What is crate training? I mean I have heard of it before and I do kinda know what it is. But I need in more depth.

Housebreak your dog. Submissive peeing is typical of a dog that is very submissive. If your pup is not a submissive pup it won't have submissive peeing. Usually, they outgrow it if they have it.

A lot of people say crate training as it is useful, but I've never crate trained my dogs. When mine are naughty – out they go Lol. Seems to work so far.
I have an 11-week old puppy and I'm currently trying to train him to stay clean. He's doing good but does have accidents. This is what I do – I purchased some puppy training pads from a pet store. Put these down on the floor where the puppy is going to be or where he's spending most of his time and when you see him squatting down or sniffing around or being restless, put him on the pad. It's difficult to know at first when your puppy is going to pee but eventually, you will recognize the signs.
I would recommend that after your puppy is going on the pads easily (always give him a treat for this as a reward for his good behavior so he will realize this is the behavior you want and expect from him) start by taking him outside.
As a general rule, puppies nearly always need to pee when they've been asleep, just had something to eat or drink or every 2-3 hours or thereabouts but it depends on the puppy.
If all the puppies have weak bladders I wouldn't get one from this person. Yeah, puppies are excitable but they shouldn't always pee everywhere unless something is wrong. Hope this helped.

Crate training is where you buy a crate and put him in it. it becomes his "den". he will not want to soil his bedroom, so he learns to hold it.

It's called excited peeing, they do it when they are excited, you break them of this by ignoring them when you come home and waiting until they are calm, when they are calm they are less likely to pee. However, puppies will pee all over the place if not taught to housebreak from day one, the first year will be full of accidents, if you cannot contain your excitement when you come home then you'll have a cocker spaniel that pees everywhere.
My mom's cocker mix did the same thing, we would always greet her outside and if we came in the house she was to be ignored until she calmed down and sat nicely then we could pet her. Once we did this she stopped excited peeing however, she will still do it if we greet her right away, hence why we do it outside.

Take him out after reprimanding him when he pees. Say BAD BAD dog and show him to paw at the door and take him out to go pee and then do that again. I did that three times and my dog will never pee inside ever. I never said bad bad dog like it was a good thing. It was in a mean voice. NEVER HIT THE DOG!!!
