Black French Bulldog - What's Wrong with Them?

Black French Bulldog is a stunning rare dog that looks powerful and unique at the same time. Purely black Frenchies have no markings or other traces of color. Their fur is simply black.

Loved by everyone!

Here is a dog that is devoted to his owner and who knows how to make everybody love him. Frenchie is the most popular dog in the UK and the 4th most popular dog in the United States! The reason is clear: cute, cheerful, easy to maintain and of good longevity, this is the ideal companion, which will not require you to be a great sportsman!

Black Frenchies are rare

Dogs that are all black and have no trace of brindle are very rare in the French Bulldog breed. Most often, the black color mixes with brown, white, or even some purple, and merle.

This beautiful black pearl is very popular with dog owners but there is one big problem.

So, what is the problem?

Only fawn coats (all shades of fawn), brindle or not, white (called “brindle fawn with invasive white variegation” if the dog is completely white), and brindle are admitted as belonging to the breed.

Black is not an approved breed color of the French Bulldog!

Blue, chocolate, lilac, black, tan, merle dresses are not part of the breed and therefore cannot be sold as such.

American Kennel Club does not approve black as the standard color and refrains from doing it not only because this coat is too rare.

Frenchies without brindle may carry the deaf gene and may also cause blue-eyed bulldogs with eye problems!

However, there are breeders who still breed black bulldogs.

The history of the French Bulldog

A certain mystery hovers over his exact ancestry. A cross between English Bulldog and Terrier is at the origin of the breed. However, other crossings have probably occurred in France at the end of the 19th century.

What is certain is that the standards of the French Bulldog were set in 1898 by the French Société Centrale Canine (Central Canine Society). These standards remain nearly unchanged until today! Since then, the success of this lively and intelligent little dog has been growing very quickly - many people have chosen him as guardian and playmate!

The character of French Bulldog

This little dog is an excellent companion: always ready to play, he is lively, intelligent, sensitive, and very attached to his master. He also knows how to be calm and patient. With children, he is cheerful and affectionate. In the presence of the elderly, he combines affection, clowning, and tranquility.

You will see that this little dog knows very well how to adapt to his owners! By no means aggressive, he is, however, capable of raising the alarm when a stranger comes.

Appearance (any color)

The head of Frenchie is wide, square, and large in relation to the size of the body. The nose is short and turned up, the stop is clearly accentuated, and the chamfer is short and wide. The ears are high, open, and triangular.

Large, round, dark eyes and almost symmetrical wrinkles on both sides of them give Frenchie a soft and curious look, recognizable by everyone.

Although small, French Bulldog is muscular, and his bone structure is thick. Front legs are slightly shorter than the hind legs but the limbs are straight and harmonious.
The tail is short, low, and twisted.

Size of the French Bulldog: from 11.4 to 13.8 inches (29 to 35 cm)
Weight of the French Bulldog: from 15.4 to 30.9 lbs (7 to 14 kg)
Hair of the French Bulldog: short

Do black French bulldogs have special health problems?

It is not known that Frenchies with a pure black coat have some specific health problems, besides carrying the deaf gene and producing blue-eyed dogs.

Typical for all French Bulldogs are breathing concerns. You have to protect this dog from a heat stroke, especially in summer. When it gets hot, they should mostly stay in an air-conditioned room.

French Bulldogs may also suffer from spinal diseases, eye diseases, heart diseases, and joint diseases.

I still want a black Frenchie!

Frenchie is a bit of a victim of his success. Unscrupulous breeders breed and sell at too high prices the French Bulldog puppies whose coat does not correspond to the standards.

So, if you long for a black-colored Frenchie and are not going to breed them or take them to dog shows, you can always find a breeder to get your puppy from.
Just make sure that the breeder is interested in the new home of his puppy, guarantees that you can contact him/her with questions after the purchase, that the mother of the puppies can be looked at, and the puppies are vaccinated and dewormed.

The price for a black French Bulldog puppy is around 3,000 USD.

Is Frenchie good for you?

Although in robust health, French Bulldog needs an attentive owner who is willing to give him care to keep him in good shape. Not especially sporty, this dog is likely to suffer from breathing problems and eye infections.

Very attached to his owner, Frenchie is happy in a house or apartment, provided he spends a lot of time with at least one of the members of his adoptive family.
