Well that is people who breed for greed, who do not care about the health or welfare of dogs. Who's pups generally experience a ton of health issues at some point and whose parents may have never left out of a cage or had the comfort of a good home., a clean place to live, quality dog food, fresh water. Look up puppy mills on google. they are horrible places and horrible people. Dogs bought from a pet store or a mixed breed breeder has some or all of that stuff, as well as many many pure bred breeders.

puppy mills are were they breed a whole lot of dogs and then treat them terribly alot of times pet shops get their dogs there

It means someone thinks the person who sold you the dog only keeps dogs to make puppies and sell them, maybe is mean to them, or doesn't care about their health, as opposed to a puppy that would come with papers certifying it as full-breed whatever, from a more responsible breeder.

it's because you got your dog from a pet store. dogs from petstores come from horrible places. often these dogs have health problems although they can be healthy as well. The worst part of it is the breeding dogs never get to live in a wonderful home that I'm sure you are providing. They spend their entire lives in a cage breeding.

A puppy mill is a place where puppies are mass produced for sale.
These mills have little or no concern for the welfare of any breed. Sickly and overbred dogs are usually bred in deplorable conditions all for the sake of the sale of the pups.
Pet shops get their stock from puppy mills and sell them to the uneducated public like the answer you got from oh wee babee.

Puppy mill puppies are so called because they come from "puppy mills". These are breeders who are totally in it just for the money and do not take the time or care to breed good dogs. The animals are usually kept in horrible conditions and are just "puppy machines". As soon as they pups are all sold, the mother is made pregnant again as soon as possible so they can sell more pups. Most pups from these places usually have genetic or behavioural "defects" and are the ones that cause their owners a lot of problems medically and behaviourally.
Puppy "millers" usually cannot answer questions about the dogs they sell, have no idea what proper dog care is about and do not have any med certificates (to them it's cost) or health guarantees and have no or very little history of breeding a particular breed. that's because they tend to go for the current "popular" breed since it sells better. I remember when the movie "101 Dalmatians" came out. All of a sudden, you see hundreds of ads for dalmatian pups for sale.
Don't be fooled when they say their animals are "registered" either: it's easy to get registration for purebred dogs.
