.:.: The dog breed i want is banned! What can i do?
I was looking to get a second dog and i had my heart set on either an akita or a german shepherd. I have spent the last year or so researching all about them and was planning to get one in the next 6 months - 1 year.
I live in dublin and i called the city council to ask them about license fees for second dogs and i was told they are both banned! I knew dogs like pit bulls and tosas were banned as that is what all the news stories etc concentrated on.
But dogs like german shepherds, doberman, mastiffs, rottweilers are all really common dogs, it doesn't make sense.
I asked them is there anything i can do and they said i would have had to have owned the dog before july 2008, had it licensed and neutered. The total list includes, "the English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Doberman, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Japanese Akita, Bull Mastiff, Japanese Tosa and Bandog. Cross-breeds of these dogs or crosses of these dogs with any other breed are also banned. "
This is ridiculous, in countries like germany they have a dangerous dogs list but you can still own them, you need to demonstrate you are a good owner and pass a canine citizenship test, have the dog neutered and muzzled in public.
Although i don't agree in generalizing all owners and breeds this makes much more sense than a blanket ban as it gives genuine people a chance to show that they are responsible and capable of caring for these dogs.
The only chance i have in owning a dog is moving to another city and that's not an option for at least the next 4 years due to university. I'll have to start back at square one again researching another breed of dog. Are there any other breeds similar to Akita's and german shepherds which aren't on the list? Not necessarily looks like one because i'm not bothered about the appearance.
A dog with a strong temperament, high to very high energy drive, a dog that likes to be mentally challenged and loyal.
I already have a border collie.
I think they are banned in council areas but i rent a house and the tenancy agreement has a clause against keeping banned, illegal or exotic pets, at the time i didn't know it included such a large variety of dogs.
