: how to train dog to eat only when given an ok command (expert to intermediate behavior training)?
Okay, so the issue is when dog isn't kenneled, he obviously still gets in the trash, its instinct. But, there are people out there who have taught their dogs to only eat when told to, for safety, (to prevent poisoning) and also just to stop having to worry (oh no! I'm in the bathroom and left my pizza on the coffee table!) About baby-proofing your whole house for the rest of your dogs life instead of TEACHING it more house manners than, "Hey, we know you're an animal and you get every single excuse except potty training." So, how is it done? How do you teach a dog to be so well behaved, they wont eat without someone giving the command?
Background : Dog already has fairly significant training, heels when walked, knows his role in the pack well, and would drop a Ham sandwich if you told him to before he swallowed it. He is a black lab/Schnauzer mix, and is so intelligent, he learned to open doors within three hours of moving to our new home with lever door knobs, and we definitely paid the price of 6mo old home alone for 8 hours the first time the back door was left unlocked, but now if Freddy Kruger came in, I know my dog could get into the house to protect me, and open the door when my hands are full :).
PS. If you're going to post that I'm a lazy pet owner and to just move my trash can, and never leave my dog in the back yard unsupervised to prevent poisoning or whatever, please don't post. My dog is my baby, and everything this is about, is for HIS safety, not my laziness. I'm not looking for a quick fix, I understand this kind of training may take YEARS to perfect, which is a lot harder than putting my trash in the garage, but I promise there are no shanks or syringes in my garbage and I am very confident in MY abilities as a diligent pet owner, so do not post if you plan to post anything that is not HELPFUL.
Thank you for your respect and consideration

Yes, Ma'am!! (Salutes and bows).
Ma'am! You must practice with your dog, Ma'am! Keep him on a leash and place his food in front of him. When he goes for the food without your command, pull him back.
That's it, Ma'am!!..
