alisa: the dog park and dog fights?
the dog park is one of mine and boyfriend's very favorite places to take our dogs. the older of our 2 dogs can not be let off lead while in an open area because of her hearing loss and we do not have too many friends with dogs so this is the best place we can go to let our dogs run free and socialize with other animals. the problem of course is the occasional, and soemtimes not so occasional dog fight. luckily my dogs stear clear of fights but once there is one, it seems to effect the mood of all the dogs and often there are more. The problem is, it seems to me that the vast majority of the fights could be avoided if the PEOPLE would just relax and let there dogs play.
problem 1- people bring their dogs in and leave them on the leash, afraid of how they will react. dogs on leashes seem to just be magnites for all the other dogs to investigate and they often become very aggressive. 9 1/2 times out of 10 however, as soon as they are let off the leash they are wonderful....
Ms Birdy- what you say is sad but funny in a way as it is so true. the worst is when the kids are running and CHASING the other dogs they don;t know while mom just watches and smiles. talk about asking for a disaster. also, when people bring strollers in which some dogs just seem to be terrified of

Dog parks are very often just a bad idea...too many untrained dogs and irresponsible owners.

Ahh the dog park where we are put in many unforgettable situations... ON LEASH in an OFF LEASH area causes problems because the dog is emulating his owners fears through that leash. I steer clear from them. Not to mention CHILDREN in the dog park. Keep them out. They smell like cookies and are small and dog parks are for dogs anyway not your kid and his hop a long side kick Mean Mommie. Dog parks now are becoming societies place to police and it can be very dangerous if you are involved with someone who is unstable and has 3 dogs that are running wild taunting the other dogs. I find like minded folks and hang with them. In a group you all are able to approach the people with nasty dogs a solution. And, if your DOG is in HEAT...keep her out...that is how dogs fight and sometimes kill for a female in heat is like putting water on a grease fire.
