Alyssa: How do I teach my dog to not bark so excessively?
My 3 year old Pomeranian is a very EXCESSIVE yapper. Obviously I can't expect her not to bark, she's a dog. But it's gotten out of control! She barks at EVERYTHING. The neighbors across the street set foot out of their house (the children especially) and she goes off. If my stepdad walks into the room, or my sister runs about she barks for long periods of time non-stop.
We're going camping in a couple of months and I would LOVE to take her with us, rather then leave her in a kennel for two weeks, but my dad won't let her go if we can't at least tone down the constant yapping. And I'm completely at a loss as to what I should do about this?

Teach your dog Speak and Be Quiet command.
Barking Dog Training
Try to find anything of your dog desires like rewards and foodstuff. Direct the doggy with the treat, boosting the dog's wish to have it. Keep it in front of the dog and command your dog to "Speak ." Initially , a frustrated breathe out, squeak, or noises will be thought nice trait. Encourage that behavior with rewards, and praise. Practice again until the dog exhibits passion and barks. Once the doggie barks, give him praise or a treat.
Whenever there is a situation in which the dog should bark, apply such scenarios in working out by commanding the your dog to speak. For instance, If there is ringing the bell on the door, you will command your dog to speak, when he starts, give him some treat. Repeat the technique, after some time your dog will be able to know when to bark.
Take your dog on leash. Command the dog to "Speak," once he barks , give him a treat. Practice this technique four to five times. Then command to the dog to be "Quiet." When your dog barks, pull the leash and command "Quiet" Very give him two or three treats. The dog learns quiet has a high value reward. Repeat until the dog does not require a leash alteration.
