My dog absolutely loves to ride on a boat in the summertime. We used to have a pontoon boat we took her on all the time. She even loved the feeling of the wind on her face as we cut through the water. However, there were some precautions we took with her to keep her safe during these rides. One thing we did was always have fresh water on the boat for her to drink. She got thirsty when we went for our rides. We just carried her bowl and some water in the cooler.
We would go fishing on the boat and sometimes the heat would creep in on us. This is when all of us would take a swim. Our dog would wear her lifejacket on the boat an in the water. This enabled us to grab her safely if we needed since this lifejacket had a handle on it.
Our dog was also taught to stay on the boat until we told her to come off of it. This kept her from jumping in the lake while the boat was moving. It would have been dangerous for her to do so. If you are going to summer boat with your dog, or boat at anytime of the year, you need to teach it to stay on the boat when it is gliding through the water. Also we had our dog's collar and leash with us to put on her before she was allowed to get off at a dock or back at shore.
There are places on the lake we would go that would have insects hanging around. Our dog always have her flea and tick protection on, also we would spray extra on her to keep the other insects away.
So none of us would get too much sun we had the canopy open on the boat. This gave us a large area of shade. Our dog would lay under on one of the seats to stay out of the heat.
The rides we took her one were not long-all-day ones. They were maybe one to two hours at the most. Usually at the hottest part of the day we would go back to shore and get out of the heat. We usually camped when we took the boat out.
Also we were careful about the dog around the various creatures that can be encountered in the water. We did not let her chase the water fowl for instance. These birds can turn and fight to protect themselves. This can result in your dog being injure or you being attack. So don't just laugh and think it is funny. In the summer or other times of the year this is something to take good care of your dog around.
Our dog would get excited when we were packing up the car to go off to take our boat in the water. She was as giddy as a little kid in a toy shop. When she got on the boat our dog would act like she owned. It was a great time that we safely had with her in the summers, because we knew how to take good care of her.
